A ways back I wrote a post called A Look at the Jesus Story, Oral Tradition and Eyewitness Memory.

Hopefully, both the Christian and the non-Christian should be able to agree that since historians can’t verify the events directly, they rely on things such as written documents (both primary and secondary sources), external evidence/archaeology, and the testimony of the witnesses to the events.

One thing that should be noted: high impact events that have strong emotional involvement can be remembered with great accuracy over a long period. For example, my sister died in 1973. Even though I was four years old at the time, I can still remember much of the details of the day it happened. Obviously, high impact events such as a death of a loved one, or an event like the Holocaust can leave a lasting impression on the witnesses who participated in the event. In other…
